"If your records are made from PETG instead of traditional PVC vinyl, why is your company called Lathe Cut Vinyl Records?"

It's one of the questions we hear most often, and honestly, we love answering it because it opens the door to a much bigger discussion about record manufacturing, modern materials, and how language evolves alongside technology.

The short answer is simple.

Because that's what people call them.

Most musicians, collectors, DJs, and first-time customers aren't searching for a specific polymer. They're searching for a vinyl record. Whether someone wants to press ten thousand albums or order a single custom record as a gift, the words they naturally use are remarkably consistent. They search for lathe cut vinyl, custom vinyl records, dubplates, or one-off vinyl records. Very few people search for PETG records, even though PETG has become one of the most widely used materials for modern individually manufactured records.

Collectors spend years building their vinyl collections. Record labels advertise vinyl releases. Very few people stop to ask whether a record is manufactured from PVC, shellac, lacquer, PETG, or another material entirely. To the overwhelming majority of music fans, they're simply vinyl records.

Language changes over time.

The music industry is full of examples where the original technical meaning of a word has expanded into something much broader.

Take the word mastering.

Today, musicians think of mastering as the final stage of audio production. A mastering engineer prepares the finished mix for release by making subtle tonal adjustments, controlling dynamics, sequencing songs, and ensuring the music translates well across different playback systems.

Historically, mastering meant something much more literal.

The master was the physical source used to manufacture copies. Vinyl required a lacquer master cut on a precision lathe before stampers could be produced. Compact discs required a glass master before replication. Analog tapes required a master tape that served as the source for commercial duplication.

Today, millions of songs are mastered without ever producing a physical master at all, yet we still call the process mastering because the meaning of the word evolved alongside the technology.

The exact same thing happened with the word vinyl.

While PVC remains the standard material for commercially pressed records, the word itself has become shorthand for the record format rather than simply the chemistry behind it.

That doesn't mean we're secretive about the material we use.

Quite the opposite.

Every product page on our website clearly explains that our records are manufactured from PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified) rather than PVC. We believe customers deserve complete transparency about the products they're purchasing, and we're proud to explain exactly why we made that decision.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if a record isn't made from PVC, it somehow isn't a "real" record.

We simply don't see it that way.

A record is defined by much more than the chemistry of the material. It has precision-cut grooves that carry audio information. It spins at standardized playback speeds. It uses the same center hole dimensions that have existed for generations. It plays on conventional record players using the same mechanical process that has fascinated music lovers since the middle of the twentieth century.

Whether that groove is cut into PVC, PETG, lacquer, shellac, or another suitable material, the listener is still placing a stylus into a groove and reproducing music through mechanical motion.

The format hasn't changed.

The material has.

That brings us to another obvious question.

If PVC has been used successfully for commercial records for decades, why did we choose PETG?

The answer begins with understanding that we don't manufacture records the same way commercial pressing plants do.

Commercial records are designed for mass production. A mastering engineer first cuts a lacquer or copper master on a precision record-cutting lathe. That master enters an electroplating process where metal parts are produced, eventually creating stampers capable of pressing thousands or even hundreds of thousands of identical PVC records. Once the stampers exist, heated PVC is compressed under enormous pressure to create finished records quickly and efficiently.

Our manufacturing process is entirely different.

Every record we produce is manufactured individually from start to finish.

There are no stampers waiting to press thousands of copies. There are no molds. There are no hydraulic presses. Every groove is cut directly into a solid blank using a precision diamond cutting stylus. When the cut is complete, the record itself is complete. There isn't another manufacturing stage waiting afterward because each record is already the finished product.

That difference in manufacturing naturally leads to a different choice of material.

PETG has become one of the preferred materials for modern lathe-cut records because it machines exceptionally well, maintains excellent dimensional stability, and performs beautifully when used with precision diamond cutting systems. Rather than adapting a material designed for high-volume pressing to a completely different manufacturing method, we chose a material better suited to the way we actually build records.

There was another reason behind that decision.

As a company, we've made a conscious effort to move away from PVC wherever practical. PVC has undoubtedly earned its place in recording history and has produced some of the greatest records ever manufactured. We aren't suggesting otherwise. Our decision wasn't based on believing PVC sounds inferior. Instead, it reflected both our manufacturing process and our company values. PETG is a chlorine-free engineering plastic, and for the kind of individually manufactured records we produce, we believe it represents a better choice for our workshop and the products we create.

That doesn't change what the finished product is.

It's still a record.

It's still played on a turntable.

It's still collected, displayed, shared, and enjoyed exactly the way records have been enjoyed for generations.

The chemistry has evolved.

The format has not.

What Does "Lathe Cut" Actually Mean?

Once people understand why we use PETG, the next question is usually about the words lathe cut.

Many people assume that a lathe-cut record is somehow a completely different type of record than the albums they buy from a record store. Others believe that commercially pressed records are never cut on a lathe at all. Neither assumption is correct.

In reality, every modern record begins on a record-cutting lathe.

Whether a major artist is releasing 500,000 copies through a commercial pressing plant or an independent musician is ordering a single custom record, the first stage of manufacturing is remarkably similar. A mastering engineer uses a precision record-cutting lathe to cut the original master. Historically, that master was usually cut into lacquer, although modern systems may also use Direct Metal Mastering (DMM), where the grooves are cut directly into copper.

Without that first cut, there can be no record.

The lathe is where recorded sound first becomes a physical groove.

The difference comes after that original master has been created.

Commercial pressing plants use the master to manufacture a series of metal parts through an electroplating process. Those parts eventually become stampers, which are mounted inside hydraulic presses capable of producing thousands of identical PVC records. The original cut exists only to create the tooling required for mass production.

Our process stops before any of that happens.

Instead of using the master to manufacture thousands of copies, the record being cut is already the finished record. Every groove is cut specifically for that customer, one record at a time, using the same fundamental principle that has been at the heart of record manufacturing for more than a century.

That's why they're called lathe-cut records.

The name describes the manufacturing process.

Not the material.

Not Every Lathe Works the Same Way

Another common misconception is that every record-cutting lathe produces grooves in exactly the same manner.

Like almost every manufacturing technology, that's simply not true.

Throughout the history of record cutting, engineers have developed different approaches depending on the machine, the cutting head, the stylus, and the material being used. Some systems emboss the groove, meaning the stylus displaces the material without actually removing it. Others physically remove material from the blank using a precision cutting stylus, producing what is commonly referred to as a true cut.

Both methods have existed for decades.

Both have legitimate applications.

At Lathe Cut Vinyl Records, we use a precision diamond cutting stylus that physically cuts the groove into the PETG blank. We chose this approach because it aligns with our equipment, our manufacturing standards, and the results we want to deliver. It's one more example of how modern record manufacturing continues to evolve while still respecting the engineering principles that have existed since the earliest days of disc recording.

The History of the Dubplate

The word dubplate has evolved in much the same way as the word vinyl.

Originally, dubplates referred to lacquer discs cut in extremely small quantities for radio stations, mastering studios, and Jamaican sound-system culture. They were often used to test recordings before commercial production or to create exclusive mixes that existed on only one or two discs. Because lacquer was designed primarily as a mastering medium rather than a long-term consumer format, those original dubplates naturally had a shorter lifespan than commercially pressed records.

Over time, however, the meaning expanded.

Today, many musicians use the word dubplate to describe almost any individually manufactured record, regardless of whether it's made from lacquer, PETG, polycarbonate, acrylic, or another suitable material. The word no longer refers exclusively to one material. Instead, it describes a style of record production built around small quantities, custom projects, and individually manufactured records.

Like the word vinyl, its meaning has grown alongside the technology.

Why We Didn't Call Ourselves PETG Records

Every business has to decide how it communicates with its customers.

We could have called ourselves PETG Records, PETG Audio Discs, or another technically precise name. From a materials science perspective, those names might be perfectly accurate.

The problem is that almost nobody would know what we make.

Imagine an independent musician searching online after finishing their first EP. They're excited to hold their music in their hands for the first time, but they've never studied plastics or record manufacturing. They aren't thinking about polymer chemistry.

They're thinking about making a vinyl record.

That's the phrase they've heard throughout their lives. It's what artists say. It's what record stores advertise. It's what collectors buy and what music fans search for. If we ignored that shared language in favor of scientific terminology, we'd spend more time explaining our company name than talking about the records themselves.

Our goal has always been clarity.
