Anti-Static Ooze: It’s Time to Retire the Lighter Fluid
The lathe-cutting community is full of techniques that have been passed from cutter to cutter for years. Some are brilliant, while others seem to survive mainly because somebody figured out that they worked years ago and everyone kept doing them. One practice we think needs to disappear is using lighter fluid around a record-cutting lathe.
Yes, lighter fluid works for removing stubborn adhesive left behind by the protective film on PETG and polycarbonate sheets. We understand exactly why cutters started using it. But just because something works doesn't make it a good solution. Think about the environment around a cutting lathe: electronics, motors, amplifiers, power supplies, vacuum equipment, stylus-heating equipment and cables everywhere. Then, right in the middle of all of that, you've got a bottle of highly flammable lighter fluid. Once you actually think about the combination, it seems pretty ridiculous—especially when you don't need it.
We've even seen cutters working with the entire bottle sitting right beside the lathe. That's something we'd really like to see the lathe community move away from. If there's a non-flammable way of accomplishing the job, why introduce a bottle of flammable solvent into the workspace in the first place? At Lathe Cut Vinyl Records, we decided we didn't want it around our equipment anymore, and that thinking was one of the reasons we developed Anti-Static Ooze.
We're not suggesting that everybody replace lighter fluid with isopropyl alcohol, either. Rubbing alcohol is also flammable, and its rapid evaporation isn't what we're looking for during our cutting process. We want a controlled, extremely light coating on the plastic that helps manage static and prevents freshly cut swarf from sticking right back onto the record. Continually stripping and rapidly drying the surface with alcohol is moving in the opposite direction from what we're trying to accomplish.
Longtime lathe cutters probably know what we're talking about, and we're going to give it the credit it deserves: it worked really well. We used it ourselves, and we're not going to pretend otherwise simply because we developed our own solution. The problem was everything else that came with it. There were too many unknown variables for our liking, and, to put it nicely, it smelled absolutely vile. When you're standing over a lathe cutting records for hours every day, what you're working around starts to matter. We wanted the benefits without the mystery and without having our cutting area smell terrible.
That's where Anti-Static Ooze came from. Our goal was to develop a water-based, non-flammable, virtually odorless solution specifically for cutting plastic records. We wanted something we were comfortable using every day in our own workspace, but it also had to actually work. There would be no point in replacing the infamous pink stuff with something safer and nicer to work around if it couldn't do the job.
The main problem we're attacking is static and swarf. When a diamond stylus cuts PETG or polycarbonate, it produces that long strand of plastic chip that cutters know as swarf. Static can cause that lightweight material to cling right back onto the record surface instead of being pulled cleanly away from the groove. Anti-Static Ooze leaves a very light coating across the cutting surface that helps control that static and helps keep the swarf moving where it's supposed to go instead of sticking back onto the disc.
A basic mixture of distilled water and a little dish soap isn't something we're going to attack. That's generally a much more sensible direction than lighter fluid or rubbing alcohol. We simply wanted something purpose-made for our own process that could be mixed consistently and used specifically for record cutting. Our priorities were static control, swarf management, no flammability and no horrible smell. After using all kinds of approaches over the years, we're proud enough of Anti-Static Ooze to say that we think it's the best solution we've used.
There's another part of this process that we think gets unnecessarily complicated: anti-static fans. You'll see specialized ionizing and anti-static fans around some cutting setups, but with our process we don't need a special fan to do the job. The Ooze is handling the static; the fan is simply there to help dry the very light coating remaining on the record. For that purpose, a regular small fan moving a little air across the surface works just fine. There's no reason to make the job more complicated than it needs to be. The Ooze handles the static; the fan dries the Ooze.
We also strongly recommend working from a small bottle rather than keeping a large container of any liquid next to your lathe. Even though Anti-Static Ooze is water-based and non-flammable, that doesn't mean we want a giant bottle spilling across thousands of dollars of electronics. Keep the main supply somewhere appropriate and put only the amount you actually need into a small working bottle. If that bottle gets knocked over, you're dealing with a tiny spill rather than a flooded workbench. We've seen the opposite approach with lighter fluid, where the entire bottle is sitting beside the cutting equipment. Now an unnecessary large spill is also an unnecessary flammable spill. We just don't see the logic in taking that risk.
The same philosophy applies to cleaning the diamond between cuts. There is no reason to keep a large container of acetone or isopropyl alcohol beside the lathe for routine cleaning. We do keep a tiny bottle of isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip available when needed, and occasionally we'll use acetone and pith wood when we actually need to scrub stubborn plastic buildup from a diamond. That's a specific maintenance job using a tiny amount of solvent, rather than making flammable solvents part of the everyday cutting process. Diamond cleaning is a whole subject of its own, though, so we'll save that one for another blog.
A big part of this comes down to the kind of workspace we want at Lathe Cut Vinyl Records. We're not a chemical company that decided to invent something for record cutters. We're record cutters, and we developed this because we wanted it ourselves. I'm also a family man, and I care about what I'm keeping and using in my working environment. I don't want bottles of lighter fluid sitting around when they're unnecessary. I don't want to work around rubbing alcohol all day when it isn't needed for the process, and I definitely don't miss the smell of the infamous pink stuff.
That doesn't mean we're telling anyone to drink Anti-Static Ooze, put it in their eyes, hand it to their kids or let their pets play with it. It's still a workshop product and should be treated like one. Store it properly, don't ingest it, avoid eye contact and keep it away from children and pets. Those are normal precautions. Our point is simply that we don't believe a plastic record-cutting process needs to introduce unnecessary flammable solvents into the workspace.
Lathe cutting has always been a strange, inventive DIY community, and that's part of what makes it interesting. But being DIY doesn't mean we need to keep doing something forever because somebody figured out that it worked 15 years ago. Techniques should improve as cutters learn more and better products become available.
So yes, we're going to brag a little. We developed Anti-Static Ooze because we wanted something better for our own lathes, and after using it in our own process, we believe it's the best anti-static cutting solution we've used. It's water-based, non-flammable, virtually odorless, designed to control static and help prevent swarf from sticking back onto the record, and it eliminates our need to keep lighter fluid or rubbing alcohol beside the lathe during normal cutting.
We're always open to debating cutting techniques. That's how this little industry gets better. But when the choice is between a purpose-made, non-flammable anti-static solution and keeping a bottle of lighter fluid beside a record-cutting lathe, we know which one belongs on our workbench.
