What Is a Zoetrope?
A zoetrope is a frame-based animation technique: sequential images are arranged in a circle so that when the record spins, the frames can visually “lock” into motion. On a turntable, the record surface becomes a mechanical animation wheel.

The animation is not typically visible to the naked eye during normal playback.
This is expected. Zoetrope motion is revealed through camera capture (frame sampling),
or by using a strobe to “freeze” the rotation into readable frames.

How You Actually See It
- Use your phone’s video mode
- Test slow-motion settings
- Film under bright, consistent lighting
- Avoid dim rooms or warm ambient light
- Try slight angle changes to reduce glare
Without a camera or strobe, the artwork will look static while spinning. That’s normal.
Production Reality
Zoetrope layouts must be engineered around rotational speed, ring geometry, contrast behavior, and production tolerances. Small errors turn motion into blur — so this requires controlled build conditions.
Limited In-House Design Service
We develop zoetrope artwork exclusively for records manufactured within our studio.
This is not a standard add-on and projects are reviewed individually before acceptance.
Supported Formats
Zoetrope animation is only available when paired with formats we produce:
- UV picture discs
- Picture-disc sticker builds
- Lathe-cut vinyl records
We do not design zoetrope files for externally manufactured records and cannot adapt artwork for builds made elsewhere.
